Moving Day
Today my office is picking up and moving to a new location, and so ... instead of lending a hand in packing and carrying boxes and all the other joys of moving - I took pictures! Chronicling the experience was just the excuse I needed ... ;-) I picked this photo out of the batch because it gives the viewer the same sense of vertigo he or she feels when going through a move.

Semester's in session!
This is a follow-up post of my June posting of this area called "The Mall" at the University of Hawai'i There are over 15,000 students enrolled at the University with a 56% female to 44% male ratio according to the student newspaper, Ka Leo. Photographed on September 18 at 12:30 PM.

Mountains & Rain
Waianae Mountain range as seen from Kamehameha Highway heading from the north shore to Wahiawa. These fields used to be filled with pineapples and sugar cane, but the Dole company is slowly moving these to other countries. I'm sad to see them go ...
I did notice several new fields filled with coffee trees on this drive ... and as a coffee lover ... I have to say that is GREAT news!

Slow and Steady
Pest or Dinner?
I hear that these are an excellent sourse of protein. This coupled with the fact that they reproduce and grow quickly, it should not surprise you to find that this type of snail, Giant African (Achatina fulica) was introduced to Singapore during the second world war as a potential source of protein. The giant African land snail is also used in native medicines in West Africa (Overton 2004, in Cooling 2005). The species was introduced into Mauritius and other islands in the Indian Ocean as well as the Hawai‘ian island of Maui for its use in medicinal remedies (Srivastava 1992, Raut and Barker 2002). Scientists have identified a compound known as acharan sulphate produced by the snail which has anti-tumor activity (Lee et al. 2003, in Cooling 2005).
This info and more found here.
This one was found on the side of my house, where it managed to climb about 4 feet above the ground.
Sorry I haven't posted in a while - been busy on the job. Oh, how I have missed you all.

Hawaiian Full Moon Take 2
This was the second photo I took on Sept. 8th at about 1 AM once the night skies cleared of clouds. Thanks for the feedback from Ame of Santa Clara Daily Photo and Christy and Wendi of Las Vegas Daily Photo. For Freckled One and others - the camera used was Canon S3 IS mounted onto a tripod and using as 12X Optical Zoom (versus digital zoom) - And for Lisi - this is a tribute to your moon photo as well =)
Hope u all have a nice weekend - and Dana will hopefully be back soon once her work things ease up.
Aloha and Mahalo
A hui hou!

Hawaiian Full Moon
The moon is supposedly closest to the islands during this full moon period according to the news. I positioned my Canon S3 IS on a tripod and took several images of the moon using various settings - Mahalo to Wendi and Christy of Las Vegas DP for assisting me in narrowing the choice of photo to post!

Hide and go Seek
I love to explore and thanks to a friend, we came upon this find - Nestled in the hills of Diamond Head and away from public view is an old water reservoir that used to hold the water supply for area residence but is no longer in use - except for taggers and aspiring artists. This photo was taken on August 26th and posted on my new Flickr page, so click on the image if you wish to see a close up of the graffiti.
Downtown Honolulu
Something a little different for you all - I rarely visit downtown Honolulu but I had a board meeting to attend so I decided to take some pics as I was walking through this interesting part of the island. I could probably write a whole book about this area, but I will keep it short for your sake and sanity.
For me, this trip was a real treat because downtown Honolulu has a lot of interesting things happening - its a clash of the old and the new, from the rich to the poor, from the business suits to the shorts and t-shirts, this place is truly rich in history and diversity with a lot of interesting places to visit including the historic buildings, one of the first ones built during the times of the missionaries, to some of the tallest buildings on this island. Chinatown is only a couple of blocks away and well worth a walk by and window browsing. Of course, I have to mention that the Nature Conservancy office is also located here on Nu'uanu street - and yes, I stopped in for a visit to pick up a Ma'oli No DVD. What else can I say, you just have to visit this place for yourself - from Fort Street Mall to Tamarind Park - a popular lunch time hangout for people watching and a little escape from the hussle and bussle of life, there is something for everyone here. This is also the financial center, the wall street of Honolulu and other prominent technology companies, law firms and everything in between! Need I say more? =P
Oh btw, parking is expensive if you park in the structures and the cheaper street meter parking ones are filled up fairly quickly, so I would recommend parking by the I'olani Palace and walking into Downtown - the walk is only about 10 to 15 minutes away and a great way to get some exercise in. =) Don't take my word for it, because you can get lucky if you cross your fingers and toes - I found parking on the street before with some patience. If you're a road rage type, than park by the palace.
This time around, I got parking validation for my visit so I was blessed with free parking! I can't wait for the next meeting! =)

Darkness of Night
While thousands of west bound commuters were stuck in arguably one of the worst traffic jams in Hawai'is history, I journeyed to the Eastside into the dark of night in an attempt to photograph the full moon while my imagination began to creep into ghostly thoughts of the unseen around me while the dry brushes rustled in the darkness and apparition of a woman in white stood behind me as I photographed the night sky. Mouse over the image to see the final photo.

Panoramic View of Waikiki and Diamond Head
You will need to click on this image to enlarge for closer view. This is a panaromic view of Diamond Head and Waikiki. Hopefully, Dana will be back tomorrow. This was taken last week at about 9 in the morning. The light breaking through the clouds and reflecting off the ocean's surface provided an interesting view.

Day and Night and the Honolulu City Lights
Grab a chair, an umbrella, and a book to read...
The midnight city lights of Waikiki and Honolulu...
Guess the exact GPS location this night photo was taken and you win a round trip ticket for two to the all exclusive island of Lo'ihi, where you will be immersed in crystal clear blue ocean water and luscious red molten lava meeting you at the sea. Or, you could simply click on the image for a close-up pic.
The day photo was taken this morning by Fort Derussy Beach in waikiki. Night photo taken at 12:40 AM last night/early this morn.
