{ D } - David = Kawika
A picture of Kalakaua Avenue, with Diamond Head peeking through. There is a song by Palani Vaughn called Kawika, a song about King David Kalakaua who revitalized the hawaiian culture and Hula after it was banned by the missionaries in the early 1800's. He also founded the 'Iolani palace.
Other "D"things worth mentioning - DuKe Kahanamoku, Doris Duke, Diamond Head, "Da Kine"
"Clouds" was the best I could think of to get this photo into the "C"category, but I thought this was worth posting since its been 10 years since the United States Air Force's Thunderbirds performed in Hawai'i. They will be flying 700 feet above the Arizona Memorial and performing other aerial maneuvers above Waikiki on Saturday! I've posted more photos on my Flickr Page: http://www.flickr.com/photos/hckt/
Other "C" places worth mentioning - Castles Surf, Central Union Church, Canoe Paddling, Coconut Tree
Bank of the Orient isn't exactly native to the islands since it was started in California, but the building it resides in, Dillingham Transportation Building, is what I found most appealing in this photo. This is located on Bishop Street in downtown, Honolulu.
Influenced by Italian/Spanish architecture, the beautifully designed and sculpted marble and brick construction was completed in 1929. There is no transportation service of any kind in this building, but the Dillingham ohana was heavily involved in the transportation business, and hence the derivation for the name. I believe that face sculpture above the door entrance is a replica of Benjamin Franklin Dillingham, founder of Oahu Railway & Land Co. - I may be wrong about this =P
I thought this might be a fun way to get ideas for what to photograph, so in the next month, I'm going to be posting a picture that is unique to Honolulu - one for each letter of the alphabet.
If any of you have suggestions for an upcoming letter or would also like to participate in the alphabet soup from your blog, let me know, and I will link you on here =)
This photo was taken at Anna Bananas, a local club near the University of Hawai'i.
Other "A" places worth mentioning: Arizona Memorial, Aloha Tower
Peaking through the leaves is Harbor Court - located at 66 Queen Street and also the site of Chef Mavro's Cassis restaurant. George Mavrothalassitis is chef/proprietor of Chef Mavro restaurant in Honolulu.
He's received numerous awards including the prestigious James Beard Foundation award as the Best Chef in Hawaii and the Pacific Northwest. Mavrothalassitis was born in Marseilles, France. Chef Mavro is the exclusive Hawaii restaurant to earn Esquire Magazine’s top award, as well as Fodor's Top Ten restaurant's in the world.
Hope you all have a delightful weekend with some fine cuisine and wine!
T.G.I.F. - this is a picture from Monday. I've been catching up with work stuff so this photo is late to post but here we were relaxing at Waimanalo. It was one of those days I wished lasted forever!
The Hawaiian Monk Seals are listed on the endangered species list, with the largest single population somewhere in the hundreds, these animals weigh on average 500 pounds and, from time to time, beach themselves on the warm sandy beaches of O'ahu to take a tan so they can look "good" when they go out on their dates later in the night. This one was spotted on the North Shore, probably to avoid sharks or to catch some rest before another extended voyage in the Pacific. Read more here: http://tinyurl.com/2gjv64
I got sick pretty bad but glad to be back and gaining my health and strength again! This is a photo taken some time ago, but meant to post this sooner. Can you see the three people climbing down the cliffs? We traversed along this ko'olau mountain on the North East side of the island.
