Frozen in Time
Just as I remembered him some six/seven years ago when I was paddling for one of the canoe clubs adjacent to this soccer field at the Ala Wai. Many soccer goals later and he still sits idle until the ball sails over the fence and into the Ala Wai canal. He grabs those two oars resting along the fence to his right, hops into an inflatable craft, and retrieves the ball for some very grateful soccer players! This photo was taken this evening under the bright lights of Ala Wai Park.
This is a picture I took about two weeks ago on a Saturday morning at 8:30 AM at the Ala Wai park of two children relaxing with their dog under this huge tree.
It was a wild and windy day in Kailua yesterday and with the winds comes the wind and Kite surfers!
About 12 of us (5 guys and 7 women) went kayaking in the morning only to be greeted with strong currents and blusterous winds making for a great water adventure. Six of us made it out to Popoi'a Island, which normally would be a very non-eventful and short journey, but on this day, the strong winds and currents turned the water into an ocean treadmill for some. Others got tired and turned back to shore after a courageous attempt to overcome mother natures powers. For the rest of us, it was nice to reach our destination and relax for a bit before our afternoon hike.
In the horizon is the Mokapu Peninsula, and home of the Marine Corps Base Hawaii (MCBH), also in the shape of the Honu (Turtle), the symbol of fertility.
Haven't had a chance to post until late so this and the previous post has been back dated but the photos were taken on the respective dates of the post =)
While waiting at the traffic light on the corner of University and King St., I noticed these three bikes, stripped of their part but still securely locked up on the sidewalk near Pucks Alley about a block from the University.
This past Monday was a state holiday in recognition of King Kamehameha. My friend took the picture above of the King Kamehameha statue, draped in leis, and standing tall (see the people below?) and impressive in front of Aliʻiōlani Hale (home of the Hawai'i State Supreme Court - and translates to "house of the heavenly king").
The rose is a rose, And was always a rose. But the theory now goes That the apple's a rose, And the pear is, and so's The plum, I suppose. The dear only know What will next prove a rose. You, of course, are a rose-- But were always a rose.
A little late on posting but here is the answer to that unusual animal - its called a Chinese Silky! Some of you had some good guesses as to what this animal is. You can read about them here: http://www.abc.net.au/creaturefeatures/facts/silkychicken.htm
Someone also asked how many times I hike in a week - it varies, but on average, about two or three times depending on my coaching, work, paddling, and workout schedule.
Found this guy/gal roaming around in a friends back yard.
As for yesterday's post, Leena of JoensuuDP, Eastern Finland got the correct answer - it was indeed from the May 8th, 2007 posting, which is quite remarkable given she lives on the opposite side of the world - Very Nice!!!
This photo was taken around 1890 on the sands of Waikiki from the Baker Van-Dyke collection. Do you remember which picture I posted earlier resembles this location?
This picture is from a hike I did on Saturday, an easy hike compared to Sundays, and not as exciting, except until I came across this fallen tree! Pupukea!
Something a little different today ... In Waikiki, yesterday at 8:30 PM, there was a fireworks show by a company called The Royal Cosmetics Co. Ltd. from Tokyo who was celebrating their 20th anniversary. The fireworks were set on two barges off shore in the Pacific Ocean about 1 mile outside of Waikiki Beach. At the ending of the show was the world's largest single explosive firework, a 24" star-shell. The colors of the fireworks reflecting on the water with waves breaking is pretty kewl!
There's two videos below - I think the second video is better...
This was from the same hike yesterday as we were heading up along this ridge with its beautiful straight wall face that drops straight down the mountain. Looking down this ridge during our return back was quite a heart thumping rush.
This is from a hike we did today along the Wai'anae mountain range - that is Peter in the center navigating down along the cliff ridge as we were returning from a climb of ~3550 ft (1082 meters). The peak is the second tallest on the island. It took us approximately 2.5 hours to reach the top and involved going up and down three peaks and valleys.
This photo was taken inside the Hemmeter Building, the location of a new restaurant called "Downtown @ the HiSAM", a restaurant for the Hawaii State Art Museum and serves fare a la France, Italy and Spain, deli style. The Hemmeter building is also worthy of mention since its a historical building:
Built in 1872
Purchased by Chris Hemmeter in 1987, it underwent a $30 million upgrade.
Three years later, he sold it to BIGI Corp. of Japan for $82 million.
The state was renting the Hemmeter building for $2 million a year and eventually purchased if for $22.5 million.
Ahhh - my camera does not seem to do well when it gets dark. Seeing the scenery in person was much more spectacular than what this grainy picture displays, but I hope u still enjoy this view from our evening running workout into the mountain tonight.
Do you know the name of the beach from this picture?
