Remembering the Victims of Virginia Tech
So many lives lost, so many dreams shattered with a senseless act. Its a tragedy beyond comprehension. I tried to imagine what would have happened if this occurred at my University and frankly, its just too sad. In honor and respect for the victims and their families, I will not be posting for the remainder of the week.

Nice tribute.
Indeed, it is a tragedy beyond comprehension... yet, despite the spiraling of these kinds of tragedies, the debate to bear firearms forges on. Does having a gun promote a peaceful society?
In the words of Theodore Roosevelt,
"Death is always and under all circumstances a tragedy, for if it is not, then it means that life itself has become."

I can't even bring myself to imagine how all those parents are feeling. I held my little boy a little bit closer.

Who will post the photos of the 200 people who died in an idiotic war in Iraq the very same day?
I can't agree that this crime was senseless. it makes perfct sense to me. A mentally ill young man with ludicrously easy access to guns took out his rage at the world on innocent people. Nothing incopmprehensible about that.
What is incomprehensible to me is that he lived in a First World Country which has the best medical, including mental health facilities in the world, and yet he was not treated, and that with a recoed of mental illness he could walk into a gun store and for a few hundred bucks buy his weapons of choice. On second thoughts, not even that is incomprehensible. I understand why that all happens, I'm just angry that it does.

A response to Sally - The events that took place on the VT campus touched me deeply as well as the many other college students who have friends and relatives attending VT.
Whether you're living in a "first world country" or anywhere else, even with the best of medical access, anyone with a desire to kill will find a way to do. It would be ignorant to think we can avoid bad things from happening simply by providing proper medical care. Some people who have been treated for mental illness in the past still do harm to themselves and/or others. I still think the act was senseless regardless of the reasons for it.
My interest in posting this was to pay tribute to the 32 beautiful people and not to trivialize it by clouding that with politics and war in Iraq or elsewhere.
My views on the Iraq war is probably very similar to yours. The government of Australia, Britain and others have supported the U.S. war in Iraq and still do. For those who have deep convictions against their government's support should voice their concerns through more effective means than this post.
There are many other blogs more apt for addressing the issues of Iraq in a more formal fashion since their problems run deeper into the cultural, political and historical aspects of the country.
This post is completely dedicated to 32 beautiful people, many of whom would probably also share the same feelings as you on the lost lives in Iraq. Unfortunately, they are no longer here to express those feelings.
It amazed me how you are able to justify a killers actions to two things (1) "first world country" (United States) failure to providing him proper mental treatment and (2) the ease with which he was able to purchase a gun in the "first world country."
From your point of view, a killers actions are comprehensible to that level of simplicity?

kala, I agree with the tribute and my thought go to those families so deeply touched, but if I were American, one sec later, I quickly would ask to my brainless President WHEN will come the day that free sell of weapons will be strictly prohibitted.
a beautiful tribute to this tragic event. sadly, as days become years, the only name anyone will remember is that of the killer.
May the families of the victims, and the family of the shooter somehow find peace.
This young guy was from our area. His name was Jeremy Herbstritt. He's from Bellefonte, PA.
