Hawaiian Monk Seal

Hawaiian Monk SealThe Hawaiian Monk Seals are listed on the endangered species list, with the largest single population somewhere in the hundreds, these animals weigh on average 500 pounds and, from time to time, beach themselves on the warm sandy beaches of O'ahu to take a tan so they can look "good" when they go out on their dates later in the night. This one was spotted on the North Shore, probably to avoid sharks or to catch some rest before another extended voyage in the Pacific.

Now this part of the seal's life really appeals to me--snoozing in the sand sounds great! Avoiding sharks, however, doesn't sound that great!!

When I saw this in the portal I feared it was a dead seal. So glad to see it isn't and to read your commentary. Lovely photo, Kala.

They are such beautiful creatures. We have some seals in this area who beach themselves and then "molt", but I am pretty sure they are not monk seals.

Oh, seals!! I have been living "with seals", because my husband`s great love is "Pusa hispida saimensis (Saimaa Ringed Seal, saimaannorppa). Lives only in Lake Saimaa in Finland and is one of the most threatened seals in the world with total population around 250 individuals.", as Wikipedia says.
He has been studying and trying to save them during last 30 years :)
I am happy, this seal of your picture is alive, because it seems to be so over relaxed :)

Just the way I feel (and probably look) when I crash on the beach in HI...

Oh how I wish to be there right now!
