Hammerhead or Monk Seal
The above photo was actually taken by Greg Yamamoto from the Honolulu Advertiser at Kailua beach of a Hammerhead shark that was caught on a fishing net offshore and while giving birth to pups. The pups were released back into the ocean and the mom sadly died. If you click on the small image to the left, you will see a photo I took of a Monk Seal that Adri spotted some 100 feet from us during a recent expedition - the Monk Seal was basking in the Sun getting a tan and caught us by surprise when it popped its head out of the water. Initially, we thought it was not alive.

A sad way for these creatures to end.
Was it dead or did they throw it back into the sea?
Hi Nicola - the 9.5 feet shark sadly died in the net. TRhe Monk Seal was alive - thanks for asking - I posted more info in the post.
Hi Mark - yes, I agree completely - long line fishing nets are wiping out our fish population.
Hammerheads bear live young?
Uhm I got a similar photo (I think that was a BIG monk seal), done during a lonely walk in Dunedin Peninsula...this big animal popped out from the Ocean and went in the beach to rest and sleep (me big surprise!).
I'll post the picture soon! :-9
